William George Linge
1883-1944
|
William George Linge born
25 March 1883 in Hornsey London UK, to George
and Lucy Mary Linge nee (Smith).
George is believed to have Left home when he
was young man and this is all he would say to his sons when they were
growing up, he told them he left home because of his mother and sister?
On checking the 1881 census I found he had three older sisters than him.
On Leaving home we believe he went to Wales, but we do not know what part.
William George joined the Army on 10th March
1902 (from a copy of his Army papers). On
10th March 1903 William George was posted to
India and returned 23rd December 1908 (from a copy
of his Army papers). William George then
emigrated to Canada with we believe a blind man as a companion/medic (medical
training in India with the British Army) on arrival in Canada the
blind man died. So William George is to believed
to have joined the Canadian Army but left shortly afterwards (this is
not confirmed), it is believed he them went to work with a lumber jack
firm as a medic (not confirmed). Before 1914 William
George joined the Canadian Highlanders (Black Watch) and returned
to England as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
When William George came to England in 1914
he meet up with his pen pal Harriet Ann Gynes
and they got married in Farrington, Lancashire, UK. William
George was stationed in France and was gassed and wounded at St
Julian's gate (battle field?), he was returned to England to convalensce
at Bexhill? Due to his wounds and Harriet's
ill Heath there were unable to return to Canada so they settled in England,
they had four sons and one daughter, William George
died in 1944 on Canvey Island, Essex, UK and Harriet
died in 1955 also on Canvey Island, Essex, UK.
